Xavier Institute of Computer Sciences (XICS) is one of the oldest Computer Centre in the city of Ahmedabad. The Centre was established with the objective of providing computer environment for the academic and research community of the institute. It has been a pioneer and innovator in introducing the system of learning computer through computers (on-line learning). The Centre offers training and software development apart from being a support service for the faculty, students and staff. The income generated from these activities is an important and significant means to ensure the financial autonomy of the Xavier Research Foundation as a not-for-profit NGO, and makes possible several research thrusts.

Infrastructure

The computer training facilities feature a comfortable learning environment with a heterogeneous network of 80 computers with Ethernet backbone. The computing facility includes:

  Four servers, with a 4-Port KVM Switch to control them. 

Operating systems are MS-Windows 2000/2003 servers, Red Hat Linux 10, and Novell Netware networked by two 24-Port Gigabit switches. 

The servers are powered by two UPS systems.

A 2Mbps speed broadband based Internet connectivity is integrated into the network. 

Various software packages and graphic tools are maintained to facilitate the general computing requirements. 

Scanners, dot matrix printers, high-speed laser printers, multimedia projector, and CD/DVD writers are the other attractions of the computer center. 

New hardware and software are procured on a regular basis so as to provide a state of the art computing facility to the XRF family. 

The Centre also houses an exclusive computer maintenance laboratory, with full-time computer maintenance faculty. 


Courses Offered


PGDCA

Every academic year XICS announces a new batch for the One Year Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications. PGDCA is an initiation course for students who want to become skilful and knowledgeable IT professionals. The course structure covers the essential elements of computer applications and is of use to any graduate who, wishes to enhance the use of computer in his/her discipline, or is willing to start his/her career in the field of computer at the ‘Programmer Level’.

This course is an ALL INDIA course conducted by Jesuit Colleges associated with the Xavier Board for Computer Education (India).

This course is offered for the duration of 12 months, starting in the month of July. Classes are held five days a week. There is a Morning batch and the timing for the batch is as follows:

Morning Batch : 7.45 AM – 9.45 AM

Evening batches can also be scheduled for a minimum batch of 10.

Certificate Course in Hardware Maintenance 

XICS also conducts a Certificate Course in Hardware Maintenance. This course is a value-added course conducted for those interested in self employment or post-work added income generation. 


Short-Term Courses

The institute conducts an array of short-term courses which can also be tailor-made to suit the specific requirements of individuals or groups. These courses are packaged to address and fulfill specific limited requirements of students and employees of the academic, commercial and industrial organizations.


Collaborations 

The infrastructure and manpower expertise of the Centre enables it to link with St. Xavier’s College to run a Gujarat University approved, UGC recognized Certificate Course in Hardware Maintenance (employment oriented), exclusively for St. Xavier’s College students.


Software Development


Drawing on over two decades of experience, XICS has great depth of experience in providing customized software development services. 

  An ERP package is currently being developed for RBD Engineers, Gandhinagar to help automate the enterprise and speed up transactions across the organization. These solutions typically integrate all facets of the business, including planning, manufacturing, sales, human resources, quality assurance, etc.

  An Invoice Printing package has been developed for G K Auto, Bhiwadi (Rajasthan).

  Medicinal plants database access package.

  SISOSYS (Sales Invoicing & Sales Ordering System), EXIM (Export Import) and QC (Quality Control) developed for Texel Industries, Ahmedabad.

  Financial Accounting System integrated with FC (Foreign Contribution).

  APA Costing for Anand Press.

  Package for monitoring and managing two tribal Milk Co-operatives.


The Computer Centre is also involved in developing software for in-house use. The following is a partial list 
of the in-house software generated by the Centre:


  A real-time 'Student registration, attendance and grade tracking system' used by the college to maintain student records on a daily basis. 

  Financial Accounting System used by the college for financial monitoring.

  Front Desk Management System used by the Centre to manage student details, payment details, etc.

  Library Management software has been used to computerize all the activities at the institute’s library.

  Payroll package used comprehensively by the accounts section.
